In the far northeast of Uganda, where the plains roll wide beneath enormous skies, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve protects more than 200,000 hectares of open plains, woodland, and seasonal wetland, one of the last great grassland systems in East Africa.
This is a place of extraordinary ecological significance and genuine human complexity. It sits at the heart of Karamoja, one of Uganda's most marginalised regions, where communities depend directly on the land for survival and where livestock, culture, and conservation must find common ground.
It is Uganda's first co-managed wildlife reserve, a national conservation partnership bringing together the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Space for Giants, and Karimojong Overland Safaris to restore a landscape, rebuild wildlife populations, and prove that conservation can create lasting value for the people who live alongside it.
